Throughout most of human history people believed in many gods. In Antiquity the idea of monotheism was formed. First the Jews stated that God and God alone created and ruled everything. Later the Christians created their own branch of religion that follows the teachings of Jesus. Christianity quickly became very popular, but after the Renaissance many Christians started to doubt the Roman church. The church and Europe with it became divided into two camps, the Roman Catholics and the protestants. This resulted in warfare and bloodshed. The Dutch Revolt was partly caused by these conflicts. Another cause for this Dutch conflict was the attempt by the king to centralise and increase his power.
