The first half of the 20th century is known as the time of world wars. The First World War started in 1914 and ended in 1918. The period after this war was later dubbed the Interbellum (period between the wars). In this period Russia was transformed into the Communistic Soviet Union, the economic crisis in 1929 occurred and the Nazis rose to power in Germany. In 1939 the Second World War started. This war ended in 1945.
Today another devastating European war like the first and second worlds wars seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. The European Union, the United Nations and NATO all try to prevent war or limit the chances of a conflict getting out of hand quickly and becoming a war. Europe had been fighting for centuries, but after the two world wars the notion that peace might be preferable dawned on most Europeans.
The development of modern technology also skyrocketed because of the wars. Computers, radar, nuclear power, aviation and internet; all were either invented or further developed because of the conflicts in the 20th century. Some argue that times of pain and distress are needed for the development of the human race. Would you go back to stop the Second World War from happening, knowing that our current lives would be altered by your action?
